What
is Reiki?*
For
centuries, the art of spiritual healing
has been an integral part of human wellness
for many cultures. Around the world, one
can find different terms for the "life
force" that is believed to course through
every living being on earth. In China, it
is called "chi," and in Hawaii
it is called "ti." Every culture
that is aware of, and believes in, this
force has its own particular name for it,
as well as its own way of healing the life
force when it becomes damaged. One form
of spiritual healing that originated in
Japan is called "Reiki." When
the word Reiki is broken down, it is believed
to mean "Universal" (Rei) "Life
force" (Ki). The practice of Reiki
is, in its simplest explanation, a healing
of the universal life force that resides
in every human being.
Reiki
teaches that all people are capable of healing
themselves, and each other, once they have
achieved a spiritual connection with the
specific Reiki energy force. Damage is done
to the body when the paths on which the
life force travels become interrupted. Interruptions
can be caused by injuries or negative thoughts
and feelings about one-self. Once the life
energy within the body becomes unable to
flow freely, the cells, muscles, and organs
within the body that were being sustained
by that life energy will begin to suffer,
and illness or injury will result. By using
the art of Reiki, the practitioner taps
into the patient's life force and attempts
to heal it by using positive energy at the
source of the negative energy blockage to
remove and heal it. Reiki itself is believed
to be a special kind of positive energy,
and those who possess the ability to channel
it believe it heals by resonating at a higher
level than normal life force energy and
is therefore capable of redirecting that
energy as needed. Reiki healing is generally
performed using one of three methods.
 |
The
first Reiki method is practiced
through the direct laying on of hands.
A Reiki practitioner uses a gentle physical
touch to help align the life force energy
within the patient's body. This method
is generally used to treat a specific
ailment.
The
second Reiki method is used
for cleansing the aura of a patient.
Practitioners of Reiki believe that
the aura--an invisible layer of energy
that surrounds the body--is representative
of the energy within the body. By cleansing
the aura, the energy within the body
is realigned and set straight. With
this method, the Reiki practitioner
keeps his/her hands several inches from
the patient's body and uses a sweeping
motion to cleanse the entire aura around
the patient's body. This method is generally
used to help correct possible problems
before they arise and to treat ailments
of a non-specific nature.
The
third Reiki method is long
distance healing. It is believed that
since the life force energy is constantly
flowing in and around us and can travel
long distances, it is not necessary
for the practitioner and the patient
to be in the same room or even the same
country. The practitioner using this
method simply channels the Reiki energy
to the person in need. |
While
Reiki healing is of a spiritual nature, it
does not adhere to any one religion. There
is no deity associated with Reiki, which means
that it can be freely used by any who believe
in its healing powers regardless of religious
beliefs. It is also not dependent on the intellect
of the person trying to learn. The art of
learning Reiki is believed to be a spiritual
process, but it is an introverted process
focusing on the spirituality of the student.
